Engineering Expertise Across Civil, Structural and Geotechnical Disciplines
AM Consulting Engineers is led by a team of Chartered Engineers with over 100 years of combined experience delivering major infrastructure projects across Northern Ireland, Ireland, and international markets.
Our senior team includes Fellows and Members of Engineers Ireland (CEng FIEI, CEng MIEI) and the Institution of Structural Engineers (MIStructE), bringing specialist knowledge across: (1) Civil Engineering – water infrastructure, wastewater treatment, drainage systems and flood risk management. (2) Structural Engineering – building design, water retaining structures, and temporary works.(3) Geotechnical Engineering – ground investigation, foundation design, slope stability and soil stabilisation.
Each Director is Chartered in their respective discipline and actively contributes to professional development within the engineering community, including mentoring graduate engineers and serving on technical committees for Engineers Ireland and IStructE Northern Ireland & Ireland. Based in Belfast and Cork, our team has successfully delivered projects for clients including NI Water, Uisce Éireann, and contractors operating across the UK, Ireland and the Middle East.
Aidan McCarthy
Managing Director
BEng (Hons) CEng FIEI
Aidan is the Founder and Managing Director of AMCE. He is a Chartered Civil Engineer (BEng (Hons) CEng FIEI) with 20+years’ experience in the delivery of major civil engineering projects in the water, transportation, flooding, and infrastructure sectors in Ireland, UK, and the Middle East (UAE, Iraq, and Saudi Arabia). He has held senior management and Director level positions with multi-national engineering consultancies, accountable for strategic planning, client/business development, team restructuring and effective delivery of challenging civil engineering projects.
Aidan has strong leadership qualities, and a blend of technical and commercial skills that enable the cost-effective delivery of civil engineering projects. He is well established within the sector and has built an extensive network and strong relationships with clients in the UK and Ireland. Aidan strives to create strong partnerships and values open and honest communication at all levels and stages of a project.
Aidan volunteers with Engineers Ireland to interview and assess CEng candidates completing their Professional Review. He places a huge emphasis on continuous professional development, providing mentoring, guidance and support to colleagues (past and present) in the development of their careers.
He also volunteers as an Under 10 Gaelic Football and Camogie coach at Naomh Éanna. Having played for many years at Naomh Eanna, he now helps to train his daughters teams. AMCE is a proud sponsor of Naomh Éanna, as well as OPHIR Rugby FC and Lurgan Town Football Club – supporting grassroots sports is one of our key commitments.
Paul McGreevy
Director (Structures)
BEng (Hons) CEng FIEI MIStructE
Paul is a Chartered Fellow with Engineers Ireland, and he is a Chartered Member of the Institution of Structural Engineers. He is also the Honorary CPD Officer and a Committee Member for the IStructE Northern Ireland & Ireland branch. He’s a strong advocate of mentoring and supporting junior engineers, technicians, and apprentices.
Paul has played a key role in the delivery of many iconic local structures, including; the redevelopment of the fire damaged Primark Building Belfast, the University of Ulster Belfast Campus, the Titanic Signature Building Belfast, and St Annes Cathedral Spire Belfast to name a few. He has a strong background in the design and detailing of water retaining structures and associated infrastructure for the water and wastewater industry.
In his spare time, he enjoys following rugby and looks forward to his annual Six Nations and European Rugby Champions Cup Final trips. As a father to two young boys, he spends most of his evenings and weekends running between Lurgan Town Football Club, Portadown Hockey Club, and St Pauls GAC Lurgan watching his sons develop into enthusiastic young sportsmen. Sarah McCarthy
Director (Operations)
BSc (Hons) Business IT, DipM MCIM
Sarah is Director of Operations at AMCE, responsible for the efficient and effective management of the day-to-day operations of the organisation.
Sarah is helping to drive forward AMCE’s collective ambition to be one of the the leading engineering consultancy organisations, aiming to deliver outstanding project outcomes using engineering excellence and sustainable practices. Her role is multifaceted to include: business and strategic planning; financial management; workforce management; devising processes and policies to aid business scaling; ISO compliance, and marketing activities.
Sarah is a Chartered Marketer and has a BSc (Hons) in Business IT. Sarah has 20+years’ experience as a Management Consultant. She has worked in large multi-national consultancy firms, followed by her role as Managing Director of her own successful SJC Consultancy business. Sarah’s experience includes carrying out value for money assessments of EU Programmes worth in excess of £500m, as well as strategic planning and economic appraisals for local councils, and business planning for private sector clients. The skills and business acumen Sarah has gained in previous employment and her entrepreneurial background are transferable to her career change and new role to support and drive forward the ambitious growth plans of AMCE.
Brendan Ryan
Technical Director (Civil)
MEng CEng MIEI
Brendan is a Chartered Civil Engineer with 14 years’ experience. He has worked on complex projects involving multidisciplinary teams within the water industry. His employment background includes a combination of both contracting and technical design experience. He has also attained extensive knowledge of anaerobic digestion and associated statutory regulation such as DSEAR regulations.
Brendan adds value to our civil engineering offering through his comprehensive understanding and knowledge of materials, construction techniques, construction details, value engineering and management of interfaces with EICA design teams.
He won the Jacobs dissertation prize and the University Medal for highest scores obtained in his final year at University. In his spare time, he’s a keen sports spectator with particular interest in GAA and football.
Chris Chapman
Associate Director (Geotech)

Chris is a Chartered Civil Engineer with over 13 years design experience. He has worked for both consultants and contractors throughout his engineering career and has extensive experience and knowledge in the design and construction of technically challenging geotechnical projects in the UK and Ireland.
In his current role, Chris is responsible for leading and growing the geotechnical capability in AMCE. He is responsible for the successful delivery of civil, and geotechnical designs across a wide range of sectors. His duties include design, project management, cost control, technical approval of highway and rail structures, technical advisory services and supervision of a wide range of projects in the construction sector.
Chris is a Chartered member of Engineers Ireland and also a member of the Northern Ireland Geotechnical Group. He was also previously a member of the Federation of Piling Specialist technical committee.

Ryan is a Chartered Civil Engineer with over a decade of design consultancy experience. He has substantial knowhow in providing structural design solutions for the UK, Ireland & Middle East Markets. He has significant expertise in the water industry, working extensively on both contractor led design & build projects, and client representation roles.
Ryan is responsible for providing AMCE with structural design, specifications, technical drawings, project management, technical approvals & advisory services within a wide range of civil & structural construction sectors. Ryan endeavours to deliver practical solutions promptly to suit contractual constraints.
Ryan is a chartered member of the Institution of Civil Engineers.
Philip Sanlon

Philip is a Geotechnical Engineer with 6 years experience. He has worked on design and build projects involving close design / contractor collaboration to achieve value engineered solutions. He has experience of managing geotechnical projects, particularly in soil stabilisation.
Philip’s experience encompasses the full project cycle, from creating tender documents, specification and supervision of GI works, interpretation of ground conditions and geotechnical design for shallow and deep foundation, earthwork slopes, soils nails, retaining walls, and soil stabilisation.
**Philip was awarded the prestigious Adrian Long Medal for the best paper published in one of ICE Journals for his paper “Assessment of Skempton’s pore water pressure parameters B and A using a high-capacity tensiometer”

Matt Stenson

Matt is a CAD/BIM Manager, with over 18 years of experience working in the civil & structural engineering sectors. He has gained extensive knowledge throughout his career enabling him to help deliver significant projects across Ireland, the UK and the Middle East.
His expertise in CAD, Revit and Civil 3D aids him in his current role, where he manages and mentors a growing team of engineers and technicians along with producing drawing packages for the many interesting and challenging projects that AMCE has to deliver.
Matt is kept busy in his spare time, with a young family and is a sports enthusiast who enjoys all aspects of Football, Formula 1 and American Football.
