Invest NI Ambition to Grow

AM Consulting Engineers is one of the 37 SMEs awarded support by Invest NI’s Ambition To Grow (ATG) Programme.  

ATG is a pilot scheme aimed at encouraging businesses who are not currently Invest NI customers, to commit to investing in both new employees and business growth activities, and lead to more sales being generated from customers outside Northern Ireland. Read more here.

The ATG launch event took pace on 21 March 2023, attended by our Directors, Aidan McCarthy, Paul McGreevy and Sarah McCarthy.

Aidan was invited to be part of  Invest NI’s Q&A panel to discuss the programme and AM Civil Engineering’s growth aspirations.

What prompted you to apply to Ambition to Grow?

The timing was perfect for our business, as the programme opened when we had been operating for over a year and we could clearly see significant opportunities for growth in the market. Even the title of the programme encapsulates our own drive for growth, and we believed it would be a good match.

Why have you decided now is the right time to commit to growing your business?

The market conditions are ideal for growth. Civil engineering services is enjoying a period of high growth, both globally and regionally, with significant investment towards infrastructure projects over the next 10+years.

What are your main goals in the next 1-2 years?

To create 10+ additional jobs, to build brand recognition and enable export-led growth over the next 12-18 months. We have recently refurbished a new office space, invested in IT equipment and software, as well as HR systems – all of which build the foundations of a business that can easily scale at pace to take advantage of the market conditions.

What are the key challenges you foresee for you and your business as you enter a period of growth?

Difficultly recruiting staff with the required skills to support business growth is a key challenge. We will mitigate this by building an innovative and dynamic business to attract new staff. Our robust training and support package will also contribute towards enhanced skills and competencies.  A challenge is also ensuring we, the Directors, dedicate time towards strategic planning to drive forward and future-proof the business. This further emphasises the need to recruit good staff to manage service delivery to free up the Directors time.
